Trek Rules & Safety Information
- Anyone under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult
- Anyone under 16 years of age must have an adult sign their registration and waiver form
- Bike helmets are required at all times
- Baby buggies behind bikes are prohibited
- Stay on marked hiking trails
- Hike in single file- do not trample sensitive vegetation
- Carry trash in, carry trash out
- Radios, Walkmans & headphones are prohibited
- Any use of illegal drugs or the use of alcohol on the trek route(s) is prohibited
- Obey all traffic laws on the road
- Always be in control of your bicycle and body
- Ride on the right side of the roadway, with traffic
- Ride bikes single file; do not draft
- Pass on the left side of a cyclist- after yelling out, “on your left”
- Ride a safe distance away from other cyclists
- Give proper hand signals so that motorists & cyclists are aware of your intentions
- Never run a stop sign or traffic light
- Use extreme caution when crossing intersections- even if you have the right-of-way
- Obey instructions of volunteer road crews
- Use caution when descending hills; brake lightly and hold onto your handle bars securely
- Always cross railroad tracks straight on (90° angle)
- Use caution in the rain; roadways can get very slippery and braking distance is longer
- Movements should be smooth and slow. Do not ride through puddles. Watch out for wet leaves and loose gravel.
- Never stop abruptly. If you need to stop, warn others by yelling out, “stopping”. Then pull off the road out of the way.
- If you encounter a chasing dog, talk calmly and shout “back”; squirt it with your water. Be prepared to dismount. Dogs like to chase moving objects.
- If you encounter lightning, avoid trees, open spaces, metal objects, fences and unsafe structures. Try to find a fully enclosed building for shelter. Do not cluster in a group.
