Crooked River Initiative

Loon Echo is part of the Upland Headwaters Alliance, a collaboration of area land trusts working with the Portland Water District to protect the Crooked River watershed through outreach and education.  See the upcoming events and field trips at the bottom of this page.

Crooked River Facts:

  • Fifty miles in length (approximately)
  • Flows from Song Pond in Bethel through Albany, Waterford, Norway, Otisfield, Harrison, Casco and Naples.
  • Is a part of the Presumpscot River Basin
  • 76,000 acres of predominantly forest land in a drainage area of 275 square miles
  • The river is the largest tributary stream flowing into Sebago Lake, which supports the state’s largest water utility, the Portland Water District (PWD). PWD services 200,000 customers in 20 communities.
  • The river supports one of only four known indigenous populations of landlocked Atlantic salmon in Maine. 70% of Sebago Lake’s fishery is supported by the river.
  • The river is almost entirely rated AA (highest water quality and free flowing).

June 22, 2009- Glacial Origins of the Crooked River Watershed-
This event is part of the Crooked River Initiative Series. Woody Thompson of the Maine Geological Survey will present on the geologic history of the watershed at the Norway Public Library at 7 p.m. FMI contact Western Foothills Land Trust at (207) 739-2124 or wflt@megalink.net.

June 27, 2009- Conservation Forestry Field Day
This event is part of the Crooked River Initiative Series. The American Forestry Foundation and its partners will be teaching landowners about forestry and wildlife management, carbon sequestration and other topics on a conservation property in Waterford from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. View and print the registration brochure here or contact Western Foothills Land Trust at (207) 739-2124 or wflt@megalink.net to sign up (deadline 6/23).

July 18, 2009- Jugtown Plains Habitat Walk and Talk
This event is part of the Crooked River Initiative Series. John Gunn, Forest Ecologist and Ornithologist, and Pixie Williams, Plant Biologist, will guide participants through the flora and fauna of the Jugtown Plains, a Hancock Lumber property. August 6, 2009- Forest to the Faucet Presentation
This event is part of the Crooked River Initiative Series. Paul Barten from UMass is partnering with the US Forest Service on a study of public reservoir watersheds in the northeast quadrant of the U.S. Findings are significant to the Sebago and Presumpscot watersheds.  Paul Hunt from the Portland Water District will also speak about water quality research
on the Crooked River. The event will take place at 7 p.m. at
the Alfond Auditorium at St. Joseph’s College in Standish.
